What's in a Name? 8/20/2008 7:09:17 AM
As an author I am interested in names. Charles Dickens was particularly good at naming his characters. I’ve never forgotten the name Uriah Heep and the miserable character Dickens created to go with it. And Daddy Warbucks seemed appropriate as the name of Annie’s benefactor in the famous play. And how about Betty Boop?
The names of country singers, like Conway Twitty, have fascinated me. There are many others.
And there are the fictional detectives. I’ve tried to think of a memorable name for my detective. Mike Hammer? Guess not. It’s been used.. Christopher Marlowe? Sounds too familiar. Seems I’ve heard it somewhere. Sherlock? No. I guess I’m stuck with what I’ve got, Nick Bancroft. But it doesn’t have the ring of Sherlock or Marlowe.
