This is proving to be one noisy night!
Very often the days before and after the 4th of July prove to be times when one or another of the neighbors enjoy fireworks, leaving some noise for us all to notice, and a sky filled with the trailing symbols of the continuity of our country.
Haven't heard much of any fireworks this year. May be that the price of the items is too dear for some to think about getting the things, but, suspect it is more the mid high set who so enjoyed fireworks for several years, have now mostly grown up, finished high school and are off to college, or jobs and lives out of the area, and the current knee high set is not quite old enough to purchase their own noise makers yet.
No, the noise this night is a wandering calf, squalling and bawling, and trying to figure out where the rest of his/her family has gotten off to.
Not an unpleasant sound, mind you, just unceasing.
The kid across the fence separating his pasture and ours finished his mowing, raking and baling just ahead of the last heavy rain we had. Now that his hay has all been moved into a storage area; his pasture where we had seen nary a bovine for some weeks has suddenly again been opened to the wandering herd.
It was a treat yesterday during the day as Moms and little Angus marched past my view. I am treated to many pleasant sights as I weed my Iris beds. Yesterday it was Moms and calves.
Not sure just how or when this little bawling kid got separated from the group, didn't notice any stragglers left behind as dusk fell, however, he has been setting up the alarm for well over an hour, and is not receiving any answer.
Checked the front porch earlier, no raccoon business then, but sitting here typing I just heard the chrrrrr of raccoons coming across the pasture, and unfortunately the howl of coyotes right behind.
Checking the front porch now I see 6 tiny hand sized and one little Mom. I have the patio light turned on, that should keep the coyotes out of the yard, and Mom can run the little ones up the big oak out front if need be.
The dash across that open pasture is always fraught with adventure.
Apparently the coyotes have gone on over the next hill, their voices became quieter, the little bawling calf is still out there bawling, and raccoons are playing in the little wading pool on the front porch as Mom enjoys her meal.
