Can Substance lead to faith? 12/28/2008 3:13:33 AM
Recently I’ve been hearing people using the word substance. It wasn’t used relating to a physical theory or scientific thought. It was used to describe the personality or trait of another person. For instance, he or she really has substance; or there’s something about him, he lacks substance, do you know what I mean? I thought to myself I think I know what you mean but I don’t know if what we are talking about correlates with the meaning of substance. Looking up the definition of substance it says: The Physical matter; material. The essential part of anything; the most vital part.
What are we then as a human being? What makes our substance? Besides the organs, the blood and the rest of our physical makeup what is the essence, the vital part that formulates our substance. Can we have substance without the physical elements? Is that even possible? Thinking this way can take you deep and off the beaten tracks but it is a necessity to link yourself to the world with which we cannot see. The definition of substance refers to physical matter but how many times in our lives have we heard people refer to others by saying he or she has real substance. Have we added a new meaning to the word? If substance means physical then referring to someone in this manner would conflict with the underlining meaning. We’ve attached substance to depth, to an arena that this person is grounded, has his sh*. together. They are emotionally strong and unified with the universe; they are good and well balanced people. There is another theory that states substance exists independent from its properties even if it is physically impossible for it to lack properties. This thought can lead you to the point that we as humans are more than physical; there is more than flesh and blood that defines who we are. Most theories and questions need to be proven with physical and scientific evidence but if we conclude that substance does exist, without physical properties than believing in a soul or non-physical existence after death is a reality, a truth.
I am always searching for ways to enhance my faith and find truths to the possibilities of an after life. It is not an easy task, especially when many out there want to defuse the notion of everlasting life. But when we unlock the doors inside our mind and step away from the boundaries that imprison us the reconnection with our non-physical entity begins to flourish. We can then grasp the notion that substance can incorporate love, kindness, peace, tenderness and understanding; all traits that cannot be physically touched or scientifically disabled.
