Billy Lee was George Washington's personal valet, who also had charge of Washington's personal papers. Lee was with Washington crossing the Delaware, at Valley Forge, at Yorktown, and on many surveying and other expeditions. Lee was an expert horseman. He was the only slave named in Washington's Will and was freed, along with a lifetime pension, in the Will. (The remaining slaves, those who were Washington's property, were to be freed upon the death of Martha Washington.)
Multi-published author Len Lamensdorf has written The Ballad of Billy Lee, which will be performed by distinguished theater, TV and film actor Henry Brown at Fess Parker's Doubletree Resort, 633 E. Cabrillo Blvd., Santa Barbara on December 10, 2006 at 2:30 p.m. (This is a correction/update from my earlier posting.)
Music is also promised to accompany the performance, including such old songs as "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" which hails from 1693, rather than the 1960s. If you live within driving distance of Santa Barbara, the author would love to see you in attendance. Information: 800.929.2906
