This month it's been marketing
8/13/2011 7:43:34 PM

It's amazing how three weeks can whoosh by and suddenly you realize you haven't done any writing due to researching marketing possibilities, or vice versa, in your writing time slots.

There was a time when I naively thought that what writers did was write and other people dealt with the business side of things! Well, dream on, but writing is still what we're supposed to do. Lucky the writer who has someone else to prepare meals or even to have the Labrador Retriever carry lunch down the hall to your office (without taste-testing it, of course). And when there's only one licensed driver in the home, someone has to go grocery shopping and do laundry before the writer gets hungry and smelly really fast.

We also need to stay in touch with other writers who can be great sources of help when it comes to marketing ideas. Sometimes a local neighborhood has a group of writers who support each other instead of sniping at each other from the nearest barn roof. Treasure those folks and participate when you can, giving as well as taking.

For a good read from a far-flung writers' group, check out FoxandQuill.com. It is developing into a great newsletter site as the bumpy patches are ironed out.
