What ever happened to Thanksgiving? 11/23/2005 9:18:55 AM
It always amazes me when this time of the year rolls around how little people think of all the miracles and wonders in their lives. It isn’t Thanksgiving yet and I see stores running their Christmas monolog complete with music and all the glitter they can muster. I remember when Thanksgiving was a Holiday of thankfulness and not the precursor of a Holiday of sales for merchants all around us. It was a time when we paused and reflected on all the universe had given us and allowed us to express that thankfulness even if for just a moment.
What ever happened to thankfulness? When did commercialism overrun the inner need to stop and listen to our inner voices for the joys and sorrows that any year can bring? Who do you remember and thank for influencing your life? Who gave you the keys to success in whatever endeavor you chose in life? Have you taken even one moment to give thanks, to feel that thankfulness by living what you believe, and passing whatever wisdom you have learned to others?
This Thanksgiving I want to pause and give thanks for who I am, for what I did with my life, and for all those who influenced me to become all I could be. I want to foster that thankfulness in my family by listening closely to all they say and to hear not only words but the feelings behind each word. I want to be there, be present, and soak in all the wonder I can so that my life will become better and in turn I will give back all the wonder I have been given.
Give each moment you can and begin to see this world differently. Stop all the quarreling we see in the media each day and soften to form a better world. See others as children of the Creator whose wisdom gave us life and whose spirit infuses us with peace, gives us those moments of joy, and supplies us with all we need to become whole.
Thankfulness is a word that should be written on our bathroom mirror each day so that we can start knowing and feeling that being thankful gives. Express to those who have given you much your thankfulness and tell others how much you care about them and their journey in life. You will never know how much a simple few words can mean to someone who is struggling with illness or who just needs a pick me up from a friend.
Remember to be thankful, remember to give thanks, and remember to pass on your thankfulness to all you meet. Your world will change and perhaps Thanksgiving will once again become a time when we pause, remember, and become more peaceful in our lives.
