Atop My Hill 6/14/2014 11:45:40 AM
Life is never dull Returning to our hill after a week visiting son and his family found us gazing, not in disbelief at the sea of weedy grass surrounding the house.
Rain for nearly the whole of the previous week and we knew grass would be everywhere.
On the porch early this AM were several adult raccoons and 3 toddlers. Either the little screamers have learned the value of quiet, or these are other little raccoon kids. As adults were munching the little ones amused themselves trying to climb up the side of the tub of water standing at the back of the children's wading pool we use for providing water for night visitors.
The cry of coyotes signaled danger, emptying the porch.
Checking a short time and the munchers and little kids were back, the coyotes had trailed off out of our pasture and on to other hunting grounds.
Dawn brought the coral, peach and rose sky that always fills our being with the realization that life continues no matter what.
"A deer," spoken by Husband, brought me to my feet.
Couldn't see a thing.
"Out by the mulberry tree."
I stepped out quietly, and must have been sufficiently quiet, in a moment or so a browsing doe stepped out into the grassy area between the mulberry and storehouse housing the last, of the dozen little critters born during the first summer we were here.
Suddenly the doe realized I was there by the den door. She stopped, prepared for flight, and as I always have when seeing Bambi, I began to sing.
'Hello Bambi, and how are you,' and similar drivel, however it was Bambi, or perhaps one of her fawns or grand fawns, and she stopped in mid step to return to her grazing.
What a nice welcome home, hand tall raccoon kids playing in the water and Bambi dining on mulberries and grass.
