"At least it is smiling..."

Poem Artwork

The Grin Beneath My Skin

I have looked at myself in this selfsame mirror
All of my days now and I see ever clearer
A skull as it begins to grin beneath my skin

At least it is smiling while I am here whiling
Away the days and ways of this my mortal span

I would rather be peering through this portal than
Finding myself on that other side as I will
Someday then I suspect when this face will be still

The shade of skin will fade away till just the grin
Remains a Cheshire cat surprise beyond the pains
And ups and downs of poets and clowns like I was

My face frowns but the skull grins and that gives me pause

Wink!!

One day I will I know that
Irritate Death with a smile
Upon my skeleton face
Or at least I know I will not
Loose my sense of humor
But whether I will be….giggle
A masterpiece in a museum
Well that remains to be seen
Because a rare specie are not human
But still just think about it
A human with his unique body
With his own hour work ingenuity
How strong the unique the brain is
To build a future on “mortality”
And design buildings so high
Like the Twin Towers and homes
Airplanes and spaceships
Amazing how technology
Can dig through rock into mother earth
To collect its treasures in shafts so deep
Within its core of gold and diamante
Remarkable miracle to be able
To create class from sand
But the human body will be
Ashes to ashes dust to dust
That’s why I am saying
My skeleton will
Rest with smile
Upon my
Ghostly Face
He- He
