I recall a fallen prince

As I was reading about the life and legacy of John F. Kennedy on the 40th anniversary of his assassination, I tried to think back to that time and add some of my own personal reflections. JFK's brief tenure in office wasn't Camelot, but he was a memorable and beloved leader to some.

I recall a fallen prince,

a handsome lad,

an older brother

who led the land.

A sailor,

as most princes are,

a son of privilege

who tried to

make the world

a better place

for you and I.

With courage like those

he profiled with pen,

he challenged us

to ask not what our country

could for us do,

but what we could do for it.

He challenged us

to reach for the moon,

and tell tyrants

we were Berliners too.

Even in that darkest night,

when it seemed the world might end,

his courage never faltered,

his youthful hand held firm.

We young boys thought

him Clark Kent's stand-in

until that clear and dreadful

Texas day.

As the years go by,

we remember his streak,

a bolt of light.

A bright and shining moment?

Maybe not.

i remember the day he died, i was fifteen and pregnant with my son. I was too young and wrapped up in my own problems to have decided whether he was a good president or not and in retrospect, i'm afraid he just died before he could disappoint. but then i'm a cynic about politicians

He was one of my favorite leaders who invited poets into his White House. I to miss him and remember the day that he was assassinated. I used to live in Mt. Vernon, IN for about ten years, associate degree from SIU. Good luck to your writing.

Steve this is a very fine tribute and rememberance of a man, who turned back the missles of October, and had talks at Camp David with Nikita Kruschev, who started the President's Council On Physical Fitness, and who dared to be human, despite his priveleged birth. He was an American, a Kennedy, a family man and husband, and above all, he was a friend to the people of the world. Thnx Steve, for the memories. May the Lord Jesus bless you and yours, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth, & ((((((((((MANY SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little den sister, Barbie

Wonderful tribute Steve! He was human after all, not a god. He was a fine president in many ways, and certainly loved by many. Regardless of whether we agree with their politics or not, they are a great service oriented family, who have had horrendous trials to live through.
