File this one under "easier to write than share". In reading about the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement, I was impressed by the simple backgrounds of some of the pioneers. Rosa Parks was just a tired working woman at the end of a workday and yet because of what she did, grade schools are named after her today. Emmitt Till was just a 13-year-old visiting relatives and he became a martyr for a cause by doing what? Something that young men his age have probably always done. Such was the absurdity of the Jim Crow South.

Ordinary people

who had to stand

when nobody else would.

A dressmaker at the end

of a very weary day.

Too tired to stand

or move to the back of the bus.

She couldn't rest

in the nearest seat.

Why not?

Oh that.

An indignity

whose end had come.

A city kid

working on the farm.

Learning how

his country cousins lived.

A cheeky kid who saw

a slightly older womanand did

what adolescent boys sometimes do.

For that he had to die?

Tell me why?

The ebony key

has played so sweet,

it's enlightened us,

enchanted us,

entertained us,

educated us.

It's given our souls

so much wealth

beyond the stage and field.

Whatever our skin's hue.

Yet those triumphs

are stained with tears

and vicious taunts

and burtal walls

knocked down by ordinary people.

These are painful truths, Steve. Your poem is a worthy tribute. Love and peace to you,

Borderline Anti-Memory PastBook by Dr. Patrick ODougherty

The Borderline Anti-Memory PastBook asks questions a diary does not ask and raises the questions to dialectics and answers them in a way a memory work does not answer questions.
