So I'm on my way to my sister's home while on vacation in the summer of 2007 and I run out of gas on the south edge of Ohio, IL. This is what I'm seeing while walking from my car to a local convienience store to get enough gas to get me there for a fill-up. Walking from one end of a wide spot in the road to another takes longer than one might think.

From one end of a village

to another I went

one sweltering day.

The only port in this storm

where hello becomes goodbye.

They sell used cars at the point

where two lonely state roads meet.

Years ago, they seemed so large,

Years ago, it must have been sweet.

I sweat and moan as  I walk past

the quiet quiet houses.

An eerie silence abounds,

where is everybody?

Inside, beating the heat.

Only the ghosts and the sound of

long ago commerce are there.

as an old cash register checks out

groceries are there in my mind.

No friendly market,

no country diner,

just gas and quick food in one place.

A wrecking crew

and a beer and the Cubbies

on the cable.

THE ATMOSPHERE OF A PLACE CAN REALLY BE ABSORBED WHEN ONE WALKS...NOSTALGIA USUALLY KICKS IN AND AN APPRECIATION IS FELT, FOR WHAT WAS NOT TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION BEHIND THE WHEEL. GOOD IMAGERY IN THIS WORK. GOD BLESS. LOVE, JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
