Wynet
In the time before the time
The Reconciler’s mother’s celebrated birth
Wynet was the greatest Dragon Mage
To walk on Sha’Mung’s earth.
In his heritage brave and true
The Great Odemia, you will find
Granted title Dragon Mage
By the Creator of his kind.
The tale is told that the reason why
The great mage was so blessed
Is his willingness to die for the dragons
When he was put to test.
The oath of his allegiance
Rang out o’er the land
Those who attack the dragons
Will die by the sword in my hand.
His courage never faltered
As steel sang out on steel
As soon a one foe fell
To another he would reel.
On that mighty battlefield
He kept his promise true
And when it was over
The creator told him, “I have a reward for you.
“From this day until the world should end
A Dragon Mage you’ll be
Honor for you deeds this day
Will fall on all your progeny.
Like the mighty dragons
Whose life your sword did buy
You and yours forever
Will soar across the sky.
“And when the creatures of Sha’Mung
Look to see a golden dragon on the wing
They will remember your courage
And each heart will sing
Praises to your name
And all your kith and kin
And n’er shall you lose fame.
“So, too, my brave young warrior
New denizen of the sky
You will now have magic
Beyond the spell and scry
What e’er you wish
You can now imbue
But, Dragon Mage, take heed
That your motives you hold true
“For if you turn to evil
Your powers you will loose
And all those of your bloodline
Will pay for your abuse.”
“I fear not your conditions
No offense at them I take
I embrace them as a safeguard
For my progeny’s sake.
“Knowing there’s a penalty
Will keep their hearts pure
If not for them, then for their children
Of that I am quite sure.
Each generation knowing
The next one protection needs
Will question every motive
That impacts on their deeds.”
The Mage who made that promise
Long ago went to his grave
But the same vow to the Creator
Each succeeding generation gave.
To the seventeenth generation
The great Wynet was born
And in Sha’Mung’s darkest night
He was first glimmer of the dawn.
His magic as a child
Was greater then ever seen before
And his steadfast courageous spirit
Was like something out of lore.
Fair in all his dealings
With dragon, mage or man
His reputation as leader growing stronger
O’er his long life span.
His son held great promise
His granddaughter greater still.
She would be trained
His position as leader to fill.
But sometimes fate
Is much more then cruel.
And the best die the youngest
Seems to be the rule.
One night came a call
In his mind so weak.
He wasn’t sure
He’d heard someone speak
When the call came again
It left little doubt.
That Pyler, his granddaughter
Was the one crying out.
Grandfather, grandfather
I need you to save
The son in my womb
From an untimely grave.
He’s is the one
Of the old prophecy
Grandfather I beg you
Don’t let him die with me.
He flew through the night
Following her cry
When he finally found her
She was ready to die
He could do nothing
To save her from death’s jaws
And even today
At his conscience it gnaws.
He gave her something
To end her pain
And waited slowly
For her life force to drain,
And when he was sure
She would not feel the knife
He opened her belly
To give her child his first breathe of life.
He laid her to rest gently
In a grave dug by his hands.
Then escaped with his great-grandson
To far away lands.
If Pyler was right,
And he hoped it was so
The child’s life would be forfiet
If anyone came to know.
He protected the child
From infancy to manhood.
Protecting the boy from his own magic
For his own good.
Still in his mind
He never could see
That Pyler was right
Edgwyn was one of the promised three.
Then one day it happened
The dreaded event
A spell of destruction
By another mage was sent.
Blood tinged the spell
Its odor was clear
And the blood mage that sent it
Was very near.
Wynet did
What he knew he must do.
He sent Edgwyn to Mykal
A friend proven true .
Amara, his charge
Was sent with Edgwyn
A warrior was she
She would protect Edgwyn
Proven one of the three.
After they left
His revenge he sought
For the attacker of Edgwyn
Was the man Pyler had fought.
He went to the forest
His trap he must lay
And waited patiently
For the arrival of his prey.
The time that he waited
Was used to create illusions that charm
To forestall and dispel
Any cause for alarm.
In his scry bowl he watched them
Fall into his snare
He snuffed out their lives
With hardly a care.
Of those who rode in
Only one alive would remain
And over his life
Pain and fear would reign
Wynet pulled from the man
Every memory in his mind
Pain and fear to the man’s thoughts
He did bind.
When it was over
Wynet mounted his horse
It was time for him to follow
A much different course.
He rode to the place
Where his kind in secret met
And gave them the news
They were waiting to get.
His announcement caused
Much excitement and stir
Everyone asked who
The promised three were.
Edgwyn, son of my Pyler
Is one, this I know true to be
He’s gone to Zymal the dragon
Then together they will find number three.
And that is what history
Does say
Of the events that form
Wynet’s greatest day
The day that he made known
That the prophecy had come true
The reconcilers now lived
And the dragons, mages, humans would be joined
In a land recreated anew.
