Winter's Heart

I visited my friend Bill who lives in the coastal hills near Ventura this past weekend. He has a small vineyard which we toured while he contemplated which vines needed seasonal trimming. Our discussions turned to a new lady in his life who currently resides on the east coast and the challenges of making a long distance relationship thrive. They both are on the mend from previous endeavors that have ended. As we stopped to inspect a blackberry bush we looked up in the sky and saw a heart shaped cloud directly overhead that inspired this piece for the two of them and their unfolding adventure together.

Winter’s Heart

I wandered the winter’s vineyard

Speaking quietly to the resting merlot

Dried and leafless

Seemingly lifeless

Blackberries nestled in the corner

Shriveled and neglected

Season’s bounty untapped

So much like me

So much like you

The ocean breeze today

Brings the gray mists

That nurture and heal

Gently quenching the roots

Mixing nature’s ingredients for a rebirth

Of tantalizing possibilities

Thinking of you I gaze skyward

The angels of the wind have revealed

Their joyous conspiracy

A heart bent but not broken

Hovers above my dormant paradise

There is beauty in gray too

For life is not always bright

Sometimes to heal

Darkness must be endured

But today this sweet omen

Makes my own heart soar

Knowing that you

And I

While time and distance keep us apart

Can dare to explore our emotions

Inching ever closer

To opening that place in our hearts

That will allow us

To speak of love

Nice change of pace. I can't imagine blackberries going unpicked. Let's hope that this new affair will bring a bountiful harvest this year.

This is really nice Patrick. That new lady in your friends life will be dumping him and coming after you, if you're not careful. Pretty sure Eileen would look to veto that, but you never know, she may have had her fill of you by now.

Merry Christmas to the both of you... Dick

I like how you dance deliberately, with depth and imagery, lush and radiant and rare right up to that final rich word, tantalizing and tasty piece of poetry, my friend.

Some of the rain that fell in Ventura County in the last few days may have moistened some of those shriveled and neglected blackberries. Lovely poem her, ol' pal.

Such a beautiful perspective here, about being on the threshold of love! There is a sort of miracle of transformation in the clouds.
Awesome.
