My dad passed away in 2005. I miss him a lot but my mom was married to him for 55 years. She’s got dibs. She also has Alzheimer’s and for now at least, fond memories of him. Some people might find it creepy, but she has his ashes in an urn in her room in the assisted living facility so they can chat.
We took her on vacation with us last month to Missouri and one of our stops was the Crystal Bridges Art museum near Rogers, Arkansas where I took her picture. Walmart, of all the seemingly least likely sponsors, spent a pile of money to build the facility and acquire significant artwork.

Your poem is touching and particularly so for me. My dad died in 2008 and my mom, too, has Alzheimer's disease. She knows my dad passed away but on occasion will ask where he is. Beautiful post..

A genuinely kind, brilliant, and loving man. I miss him too. We liked to yell at Spartan basketball together. Don't forget your mom has every right to talk to the urn since it's nicknamed "urnie" and your dad is Ernie!

Getting old is awful. Living in a nursing home must be a scary way to "finish" out your life. Losing loved ones is dreadfully lonely at any age, but especially so when you’re in your twilight years. I sometimes wonder if Alzheimer’s doesn’t make our burdens - whatever they may be - less difficult to bear.

Thanks for thinking of her. I know she would think of you if she could. My father died in 2006. They had 62 years together. After 3 mini strokes, mom has aphasia and can't form her words while speaking or writing very well. However, she can read and is still sharp as a tack in her mind. She is also hard of hearing, so is greatly frustrated in communication. You have just told me I need to call her.
I have my Mom and Dad'd ashes in my room too, for twenty five years and some, and the only thing that escapes from them is good memories, your Mom knows what she's doing where it counts, and so do you remembering them in such wonderful loving fashion. Bless ya!
