A poem about peonies and their significance to the Christian season of Pentecost or Whitsun. Peonies are also called Whitsun Roses.

We pick the Whitsun roses, Effuse blossoms of pink, And white, and red. We offer them upon the altar At this Feast of Pentecost. Abundant sacred outpouring Of Spirit's flames and words Burst forth in glorious show, Like flower heads of peonies Upon the bush. We pick the Whitsun roses And offer them upon the altar Of the Holy Spirit's love.
