The Wayfarer's Dream

Distance shortens every step
Seeking visions quite unseen
He walks in sand of ankle depth
With quicksand drawing underneath

Underneath his aching feet
Precious life disappears
Each staggered inch becomes a foot
and every yard seems out of reach

Reach beyond your weariness
For yesterday was filled with sorrow
Use another ounce of strength
Lift yourself into tomorrow

Tomorrow holds no guarantees
And desert plains remain unknown
The search to find that bitter peace
In dreams are better left alone

Paul,

You are so talented. This piece inspires, and I love the easy flow of your words. Exceptional imagery here. Keep writing and I'll keep reading!

I like this, Paul.... there is an impression of the wayfarer always seeking that extra bit of mystery beyond the horizon, hinted at by the words "visions yet unseen", while "that bitter peace" suggests that he half wants to settle down, yet half dreads it. Or perhaps "that bitter peace" means death... either way, an intriguing poem.... Sara.
