SHADES

In battlefields of early spring,
we stood between the gathering.
Warrior beasts with brazen past,
were sent to do a useless task.

Solemn face without a name,
this savage place could never tame.
Honor came in shades of red,
pride was lost among the dead.

Staffs of life placed in our hands,
were better served in other lands.
Their veil to dwell in hollowed ground,
gave silent ears to those around.

Voices etched from decades gone,
echo moments when alone.
With tested spirits, gave our souls,
were left to wither in the fold.

A sad feeling with this piece, Paul. "Solemn face without a name..." - There are several similar references in your works. This fact always angers me. To the government, soldiers are just a number. They seem to ignore the profound effects of war on the individual. A haunting poem!

Paul,
You have painted a heartfelt picture in your words, and your rhyme is right on target! I cannot rhyme, I find free verse just flows easier for me, but you have mastered the skill!

Hugs,
Maria
