Just a memory...

Speeding down the highway.. Crushed together on the back floor boards of our old station wagon.. Mom driving fast.. Cigarette in hand.. I watch the long ash waiting for it to fall.. windows open.. Ashes blow on us all.. burning our eyes.. gray speckles in our hair.. funny thing to remember as we are running for our lives.. drive faster mommy we don't care.. Her hands shaking .. she lights another and another.. faster and faster we drive.. trying to get away.. We hear a car horn blaring. we know he is close behind.. Faster Mommy we are running out of time.. He screams.. you are all dead.. stop this car or blood will shed.. We all scream we try to hide.. putting hands over eyes.. Scared but somehow happy.. a chance to escape.. No more living in fear.. No more hate.. No more visits in the night.. Freedom.. I will die for this.. just the chance.. to make life right.. Go faster!! please don't stop.. But she does.. She ALWAYS does.. she is his wife.. They stand on the highway and fight.. We drive back home in silence.. With promises of a new life.. but he is in my room that very same night.. I wait to try again another day.. try and try to run away. Erica

this is scary.....like that light...thought for a moment the car was going to crash.....been in that scary time of life myself......only I was the driver

Erica...this is so vivid, from start to end it was like "I" was in the car feeling each moment of urgency to get away and then so sad when you didn't. You are a great writer.

I was engrossed in the storyline...i could feel the urgency in your words to escape.

I don't know what the "drug" thing is, but your point is more than made. For some people (the adults in this work) all roads lead to hell, you, my dear, are one the path to heaven, and taking many of us with you. Great write, intense, and truely express by the eyes of a child.

I always love your comments.. I don't think i got my point across on this one. if by drugs you mean the cigarette ashes.. that was just a strange thing for a child to remember in the situation I was in
