In Somalia the worst humanitarian tragedy ever is taking place as there is rampant sea piracy in the Somali waters that deny food supplies to come in. there is also systematic killings and kidnappings of aid workers, there is flood, there is drought, there is war, there is hunger, disease and death and displacement of innocent populations. Before you finish reading these short paragraphs, a bomb would go off in some streets of Mogadishu or a mortar would land on a residential area killing innocent people including women and children.
The world is focusing on Darfur, Iraq and Afghanistan, ignoring the plight of the Somali people. A recent reconciliation conference, held in Djibouti with the help of the UN,has brought some rivals closer than before but still the situation is far from reaching a consensus to set up a broad based government for Somalia.
The hardline Islamic wing of Al-shabab which the US has added in its list of terrorists, has immediately took the sword out if its sheath and vowed that anything built outside the Al-Shabaab premises will face the sword of Allah. Al-shabab has been the core militant group operating within the frame of the defunct Islamic courts dominated by moderate clerics and a sizeable extremists who holed up in Asmara, Eritrea. From the outset they seemed united but behind the veil of diplomacy it was quite visible that the moderates and the extremists were the odd couple.
This has become evident as time went by. Soon as they established base in Asmara the veneer of unity began to make cracks and has been widened by rifts of opposing vision till the matter culminated to a nasty divorce in Djibouti. United Today, Divided tomorrow is a culture of perpetual unity most common in the post war somali politics. It is a unity forged within the lack of unity which embarks on a road of ending itself soon as it is born. Those who have united today would break up into smaller splinter groups next day because they lack trust which acts a galvanizing agent to avoid the "Forged unity" from possible corrosion. Unity not bound together by a thread of trust is doomed to fail.
During their gatherings at the party halls or conference rooms you hear noises of divisions and unpleasant statements largely muted in a fog of suspicion but unfortunately keep surfacing in the mood of their talk, letting the cat out of the bag. They are singing a peace song Somaaliyey toosow but the real tune they are dancing to a this war song:
We are the sounds of war
Made by the swords of war
Traveling Silently
In the vacuum of war
Falling on the ramparts of war
To send back echoes of war
In the horizon of hope we see no hope, apart from that glint of hope streaking in the distant horizón like a one-night old new moon: The current peace accord in Djibouti though one splinter faction has already rejected it.
If we only had prominent figures in the world of fame that could address our plight at global level to divert the attention of the international community to the direction of Somalia! we have international models like Weris Derie, famous for her book " Desert Flower" and Iman but only God knows why they do not stand for their people and country perishing under the rubble of their own destruction. We have Nuradin Farah, a famous novelist whose works represent a breath of life for his dying nation but between these breaths (the tíme he publishes his next novel) many embers of the dying fire would disappear or get covered with a heap of ash, thus unable to sufficiently supply enough air to keep the nation alive. We need a collective writing effort to keep the flame of hope glowing. But not only writing could we save the nation. A multi-dimensional approach is needed to combat the present ills of Somalia and every one of us, most notably, the Somali religious leaders who preach peace and non-violence, has a duty to undertake in that respect.
Sports is one area we can look into in our search for peace. We lag far behind in the world of sports which means we have no athlete running for peace in Somalia who would grab headline news in the world media. We do not have someone in the Hollywood film industry either who can produce films on somalia depicting the harsh survival and environmental conditions existing in the country.
It seems that no one would ever bother about Somalia unless a big nation like the US shows some interest in the Somali war. It is pity that we still do not know for sure, if the cause of our trouble has some links with oil fortune in somalia or if the trouble emanates from the lack of it. What we only know is that we are in trouble which had led us to a triple disaster: The disintegration of the political, cultural and religious institutions of Somalia.
As of today, by virtue of my conscience, I call myself the Ambassador of Peace for Somalia who would preach peace and go round the world with the power of my writing engine propelled by the bounty of its wisdom ink to advocate for peace. I have been doing this for quite a long time but this initiative is a renewed effort to increase the impact of my peace mission not only in poetry but also in other fields of peace endeavour. Still there is one thing I should not forget: That Peace can not be attained without Justice.
Walaal, Cabdinoor my stomach has turned from reading this, such desperation seems to be the lot of all of us these days. Seems like we are all running in a vicious circle. But Allah is great, please take heart, you are not alone. I have an idea, inshaAllah posting it on your email box soon.
My prayers are still for you too. Don't see how you can reason with them though when they do not want to be reasoned with. You can always try to bring them to peace though, it won't hurt. Good luck in your course of action.
Mr. Ambassador of Peace, Your Exellence, the work ahead is a heavy one and the road and more tortuous than a corckscrew, your wish are noble, but how we can sit at a discussion table with Islam extremist holding a sword in their hands as they, ignoring it, are sitting with their behinds on the Koran that they are swearing to defend? How can reason with rabid madmen?
I hope you get God blessings, and Allah blessings and the blessing of whatever name God is given.
