In lawless countries like Somalia, women are the sole bread winners of the family as men are away in the war, killing each other. But with all this burden they are the most harassed most victimised groups of the society. They are robbed and raped by gunmen indiscriminately. Single mothers who raise children whose fathers have been killed are the most vulnerable groups who bear the brunt of the war. In this poem the children used to run to their mother when she come back home after a daylong search for bread. And with joy and fervour they throw themselves into the basket to fetch some food stuffs. But this time the situation was far different. Their mother has been robbed in the street and the food has been looted by gunmen. Sadly the two kids went to bed hungry that night.
NB: Sorry for making few additions after I have posted the poem. I have some computer problems. This is one of the stories I used to witness when I was in Mogadishu. With a new president now elected I hope that the trend shall be reversed by punishing those who perpetrated such a tragedy in Somalia. Hope his motto shall be "NO Child Should Sleep Hungry"
Abdi-Noor

Been away for work the whole day
Looking for a piece of bread
Toiling to feed my two orphans
But ended up in a vacuum of agony
As thugs relieved me of my cargo
Robbing me in a broad daylight
With no remorse of their action
Leaving me carry an empty basket
In whose depths I saw
The glaring teeth of hunger
Ready to prey on my two kids
Who unfortunately did not know
Of the tragedy
But thrown themselves into it
Almost waist deep
Drowning in the depths of emptiness
Not believing what they were seeing
But kept on scratching
The base of a weeping basket

a tragedy of the first magnitude Abdi-Noor -- anytime children and women are victims, I am left with a very bitter taste in my mouth -- for my patience and understanding with the perpetrators is always nil -- much peace and love to you my dear friend -- Jon Michael

Abdi-Noor, yours is indeed the voice of hope for a nation
and its hungry children, and the power of that voice is
articulated in the plea of the poet who cries for change.
Know that many of us share that hope. -gene.

Living here in Sweden, people can't imagine the atrocities. People like me that walked on your country can't imagine the atrocities either.
Hoe a whole race of gentle men-people can overnight be converted in such a monsters? Haven't they mothers? sisters? children themselves?
And now they are calling the curse to come all over the country, because when the penalty arrives it will be indiscriminate of innocents.

So very, very sad and tragic, my friend. No child should ever have to sleep hungry, but far too many do. And I truly hope that better times are now ahead for your country.

Abdi-Noor,
Your is a fearless honest voice heard far beyond the confines and horrors of war, it carries to everyone who has a heart and a little courage and still some hope. Thank you for this fine and very moving poem.

So much truth in your reverent words. Perhaps one day peace will finally reign, for now all we can do world wide is pray.....

Be always safe,

It is just so sad to know there are so many women in this world who are suffering from discrimination and degradation. I hope for their safety. Women just need to be stronger and fight for the rights that they deserve.

The thought of just one hungry child breaks my heart. I love the last two lines you used to end your very moving poem Abdi-Noor. Keep up the great work. You're a humanatarian the world needs. We can't fill empty pockets nor laden tables with food but through our words we can feed the soul.
Bless you friend,
Marcia
