If you have no yesterday to claim as your past you will probably have no tomorrow to look up and seriously speaking you are no where visible in the map of today, so you do not exist although you are living. Somalia is a case in point. But where there is hope, there is life. Somalia will one day come back.
History is not only the trails you leave behind
But it is also the light that shows you the way
Without a past to refer there will be no future
Somalia has ceased to exist as a nation-state
So are its history and identity as a nation
We are not even producing culture on collective basis
We still remain fragmented into pieces of lands
We are undergoing a process of evolution
Whereby we are coming out from a primitive stage of tribe
To a fairly advanced level of existing as one ethnic community
But the challenges of transition are extremely rigorous
No matter how long it takes to be born again
I have no doubt that Somalia will resurface like a lost island

Once the United states tried to help bring order to Somalia, "Black Hawk Down" and were murdered in the streets without any help from the "peace-loving" Somalies.
Now it seems that Somalia is defined by the tolerance and support of pirates.
How can there be a change when everyone who could make change happen is leaving?
The current process of change in Somalia remains a revolutionary(civil war)one. A nation that has obviously lost a core purpose to exist as a united entity. Somalia is problematic because it has not generated a common goal and desire for survival that is larger than self(tribal). Compassion and tolerance have not existed among the many factions for a long time in Somalia. Religion, greed, power, and self aggrandizement have been endeared rather than a common desire to coexist in ways that benefit the whole rather than the ethnically fractured populous. Say what you will about western democracy, I know that you oppose it, however it provides a civil forum to permit the type of national growth among an immensely diverse population to permit a united people under a united purpose. It is what made America possible and the greatest nation on earth. I have immense pride in what America has done for the common good of the whole of humanity. Jon Michael
