In between rum and cokes
You step outside for a smoke
You and your old man
Just two old folks
Sitting in the parlor telling jokes
Thinking about going to the pool hall
Or wondering who you gonna call
Fingers running across the keys
Hey, maybe Betsy Sue is back from the mall
So you can charm her with your Texan drawl
On second thought you get dad in the car
Knowing that Honky Tonk is not too far
Dreams of line dancing weaves its way through your mind
As you & Pop plop down at the bar
Listening to the local country music star
Pretty soon the night comes to an end
Time to take Dad home and put you on the mend
First you’ll listen to one more song
A blues ballad reminding you of the life you had to defend
Hoping no one knows your game of pretend
In your head you see music, poetry and art
Wondering why life has to depart
You pull the truck up to the house
Sensing a stirring within your lonely heart
Waiting for your chance at a fresh start

I feel sad when I read these lines, can't even say why...
Probably because of the ending.
Good one
