Somewhere in Between

Working for a living down at the local interstate trucker’s stop
Deserted by a no good hustler who left me pregnant and all alone
Said he was searching for something more
Didn’t say what that pot of gold might be
But certainly it wasn’t me
What a son of a bitch, huh…
Just released from the big house the other day
Traded in that orange neon spacesuit for a new plaid tee shirt and jeans
Second chance for a middle aged man with a monkey on his back they say
That’s why I spend these endless days working at the local 7-11
Second chance they say, second chance, yeah right
Maybe in some movie theatre classic on the silver screen…
Drove my girlfriend over to Vegas so we could get hitched up right
Only in our teens our folks weren’t so thrilled with the plan
But who really cares, we are young and free, and one
All we have to impress are our school friends; they are the important ones, right
Our good friends they said who disappeared from our lives as we fell down
Our young and innocent faces hitting the heavy ground…
My children drove me to the steps of the old folk’s home today
I don’t want to go to that place of solitude and degradation
I’m still sane I tell them, I’m still f***ing sane
I have control of my senses; yes I have control of my life
Ah none of that really matters they say, none of that is important
Your power is gone, and you’re wisdom way too strong…
Got me an Ivory league diploma just yesterday
Going to get me a high paying job and be a player, okay
Yeah, working my way up the corporate ladder of daggers, can’t ya see?
Got me a wife and two kids at home, the perfect life for you, and for me
Very soon I might be vice president, own a second home, maybe a boat
But, I ask again who am I really?
Oh, and what really is the purpose of my life?
And finally, why am I here on this planet called earth?
