.

He was a Maine lumberjack
felling dead trees in the woods behind
his house at the foot of Bank Street.
He was Tailspin Tommy doing loopty-loops
in his backyard swing.
He was Buck Jones riding his trusty broom Silver
chasing cattle rustlers around
the vacant lot behind the corner post office.
He was Tarzan swinging
on the limbs of the neighbor’s fig tree.
He was Tom Sawyer
whitewashing the old woodshed
and Huckleberry Finn dipping a fishing line
from a makeshift raft on Sunset Creek.
He was Jack Dempsey boxing fifteen rounds
with his cousin Gene Tunney inside a rope ring
stretched from the whitewashed woodshed
to the trunk of a pecan tree and his dad’s
old Packard rusting in the weeds.
He was Douglas Fairbanks Junior flashing
his wooden sword as he leaped from the back porch
and somersaulted over his mother’s bird bath.
He was every daredevil gun-toting, tobacco-chewing
swaggering, smooth-talking, danger-loving
white-hat hero and hombre he ever saw
on Saturday mornings slumped in the front seat
at the Langley picture show.
Until the kids began to call him Jeep
because he shared the same name and
because he had a conspicuous nose and wise eyes
and was expected to read the future
like the two-foot creature in the Popeye cartoon
although he was too big to be Popeye’s Jeep
and he let it pass because it was better
than the sissy name he was given.
But then he grew up to be the tall, lanky guy
that some folks say looks a little like James Bond
or Gregory Peck in Roman Holiday
or even the lousy actor who was making out
with Fay Wray in King Kong
while others stopped him on the street to ask
are you somebody?

(gotta love Gerard's comment!)
i used to pretend i was moses parting the red sea [charleton heston]...and then i pretended to be papillion [or any steve mcqueen character]....and then i graduated to atticus finch [God bless mr. peck].....later on in my teens, i just wanted to marry those men, or men like those men; full of gentle tenacity, character, spirit, faith. ....[i ended up with george bailey/jimmy stewart guy] :)
your writes have a sunday afternoon feel to them; like i could sit and swing with them for hours in the quiet and smile. ..

Your verses brought back a lot of memories of my childhood before adults and life stifled my unbridled imagination. Thank you, Gene. Love and peace to you,

Isn't imagination grand?? Too bad that we can't take others with us so they can all recognize the "hero" (I use that term loosely) in us! (Of course, I guess you did just that with your writing...)

The imagery you use transports the reader into a fantastic world where imagination reigns. Indeed, dang fine writing, Gene, well done.

Live the dream long enough the dream lives through you in the end! Funny... when folks give you that "do I know you look", you're hoping for the best of what might be being imagined. I've been likened mostly to Yoko Ono... and, when I was only 13, to Brigitte Bardot... by a FRENCHMAN!!!! Now THAT was something... but if he could only see me now!!! Ah, but I love the twist implied by your ending... it is wonderful to know that each and everyone of us is special... FOR JUST US! No more and no less can be any better than the who we're meant to be. Enjoyed this well-executed commentary, Gene. TY Kate xx

Delightful. Flows forward with a momentum that could undo ones tongue - when read aloud - if not carefully paced. An excellent retrospective, and insight (my interpretation) into a young persons imagination. Your talent is showing here Scotch man. Happy 4th poet!

This brought back a lot of "good" memories. For me it was a different theater and a lot of the white-hat heroes were the same and some different but I followed that same path when I was a kid. Thank you for the trip down childhood's lane. It's nice to know more of us went to this better place in our imaginations. I recall those days with fondness. This poem took me there on a magic carpet and put a smile on my face. Much better than some of the morbid topics I've been writing about.
