sleep is my enemy
five hours a good night

tonight I settle for two
lose myself in puccini’s tragic
la boheme
 and earthy soprano voice
of the divine diva
maria callas

alas to sleep--to dream
that i am the tenor poet rodolfo
to maria’s dying mimi

i throw myself
across her death bed
cry my final cry
mimi mimi

the curtain falls
with a bang
to a thousand screams of rodolfo

wide awake

I think you bangin' around over there in Absecon woke me up all the way over here in Buena...I will send something to smoke before bed and I guarantee you will sleep the night through, as will I...Ed

Gene, Maria herself, was always a bit of a tragic story, don't you think? -- you are quite a gifted writer as I am sure you know, poetry, fiction, whatever you offer is always excellent reading -- as for sleep -- the mistress I cannot keep -- she eludes me at every turn -- four hours a typical night -- many more, far less -- doze and awake in a lurch -- toss turn, read, sip hot milk --only when I acquiesce to the prescription pain killers am I blessed with a decent sleep -- my mind tells me I must not seek their assistance --so for most of the time, I refuse their relief -- peace and love to you my friend -- JMW

Very moving Gene. This poem conjures up an image of a tortured soul, one which cannot rest or find peace anywhere, and certainly not in sleep. sleep...to dream the dreams that wake us in a cold sweat?
Marie Callas; there has never been one like her and perhaps never will.

Bravo! - for the writing! Regrets for the loss, and who the hell ever said eight hours was talking about children.Your recording ranks with the very best, so don't let your sleep witch doctor mess you up. - Bill

Awwww, considering I only sleep (on a good night that is) between 4 - 6 hours staying awake on other nights, music is a wonderful, soothing source to pine the hours away relaxed. Any of the classics will do, two of my favorites are Brahms and Mozart for freeing the mind. Beautiful writing....

Be always safe,
Karen

have to agree with the Board here about Callas... mind you, am totally stunned of late by the divine, sublime energy and pure genius of David Gilmour's Live In Gdansk, so perhaps wide-eyed and sleepless is just what happens when we reach a certain age and become again baby-like in our ability to be thus mesmerised. I could give you my number... I'm also someone who gets by on less than five or six hours sleep but, if you got me on the phone, I'd guarantee that you'd be zzzzzzzzz-ing in minutes...!! :)) insomniaK Kate xx

Oh, beloved Callas! Whose voice soared through my childhood! Mom was a huge fan. (My fav is "Casta Diva") But, Gene, I also love your game of pretend--friends and I "died" with Aida during many a long winter Saturday afternoon. La Boheme is definitely one of those whole box of kleenex operas...

me, agreeing with j. Leko. Some music is to listen intently to, some is to sleep to. In the 80's there was this huge study done on how listening to classical music helps you study... They were totally wrong! I'd put on Motzart, and the world and homework disappeared, I'd get caught up in the movement of the music, and worse, because I knew what the next strain would bring, antisipation would course through me... and sometimes in movies, if the background music is too beautiful, and the plot not so great (which happens more often than Hollywood would have us believe), I forget the movie, and lose myself in the music. It can't be just me. --Charlie

Ah! I've been there many a night...but for me it's sketching rather than Maria Callas. I'm thinking it's an "age" thing. All kidding aside, Gene, I really like the way you've written this. You have a way of taking things in life that seem ordinary...and turning them into something special.

The first impression I got when I read this was "the woods are lovely, dark and deep...but I've promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep" - Robert Frost - but on a second read its kind of the opposite...maybe you need to a walk on the sea shore...the oceans are lovely dark and deep...Great read Gene

WOW, what a fantastic poem, I could picture the whole scene with the words you painted. Lovely, thrilling, but did you ever sleep after that? I don't think sooooooo. I love opera too but I never had an experience like that. Love and hugs, thanks for this, Bonnie
