on the window a snowflake melts
in your head
the unfinished lyric

the muse can be diabolical
parsimonious

given half a chance
she'll starve you to death
take what she wants
leave you the crumbs

hold them mold them
into an intangible that strives to speak

breathe life into it
deafen your ears to her laughter
close the dead eyes
burn the thing she scoffs

know that the muse is deceitful
promises the sun
sucks you into empty days
that neither booze
nor stolen sex
can soothe

the muse is a tease
reach for her
stroke her
caress her
kiss her
fondle her
love her
she'll break your heart
a one-night stand
when you wake she's gone

Thank you for this...she certainly comes to life in your words. A reviewer noted this reminded her of Lilith but certainly this is Venus herself! I'd recognize her anywhere :D

Gene, you have removed the ermine stole from this, "San Francisco Mable Joy" -- denuded her treachery and deceit for all to recognize and glare upon -- for she walks the way of Pleasure House Road, only when she's a mind to -- she is as apt to spit in your eye as whisper sweet nothings into your ear -- you described the poet's lust for her with the wisdom of one who has danced with her when she wanted, and cursed her when she declined -- your work is the work of a master artisan -- to have the privilege of reading item is a gift to be taken not lightly -- bravo, bravo, seems so woefully inadequate --you have my enduring thanks for sharing -- may peace, love, and great joy share the light of day with you -- JMW

she is the trespass of a lovely sonnet
we sign her name in ink....forever returning to carress her tools
the pen in which we keep

Gene - Perfect evocation of the muse. Nomatter how she is, she's all we've got. Though she's not true to us, we're true to her, frustration and all.

Loved the last stanza:

the muse is a tease
reach for her
stroke her
caress her
kiss her
fondle her
love her
she'll break your heart
a one-night stand
when you wake she's gone

-David

Awesome work Gene....that elusive thought which waits for us within our muse of a friend....friend, teaser, lover, either way at times it is just like torture...

nice work...

"La Belle Dame sans Merci" -- How often She leaves us "alone and palely loitering." We poets serve her, and bless her for the crumbs she drops from the riches of her--almost perceived--table.

good gracious.....i felt like this was speaking sonorous of writing itself, of creation...but ever moreso than that: o f love. love is a deadly dry intangible. of loss---coping with the bulletwound left where a BEing carves a bygone. .. .
gawds, this actually hurt me to read.
so missed your sweet sweet words....
i mean words that wound....
i love the ache.
most days.
impaling write.

Interesting poetic analogies. How fleeting the moment of inspiration!

Like a dream upon awakening, poof! She is gone...

Thought through and through, this poem shows a reflective side to the poet's power of reasoning and passion for the art of being a wise wordsmith. Here Gene, is Gene(rous) with his clever poetic schemes, his verses swiftly lifting us above a cacophonous fray of literary bumblers, of which I scribe blindly like a tailless mouse along the ground with the rest, while literary raptors soar shrieking overhead.

Gene,
You carried me away here with the subtlest combination of wisdom, experience and humour; saying the muse is parsimonius (a favourite word - listen to its cadence) is like starting with an avalanche... and the rest is simply marvellous, a lover, a whore, a tease, a sleek and controlling cat all come to mind. Gorgeous!

Fickle, my ass. LOL Even fickle, she recognizes talent when she sees it: when she gives you mere crumbs, you concoct a veritable feast - well done, Gene!

What a write Gene...the process it'll use you up...such a compromise of talent. language and frustrated thrills...we never start out to write a means to an end...but most times thats where we end, choking down our words...Great read
