Response to Julie Shavin's challenge.

take me from the sea?
what means this blasphemy?
what demon conjures this absurdity?

take me from the sea!
will I be me?

the sea is my reality.
don’t mess with my philosophy.

take me from the sea?
what a travesty!

who will fill the lull?
entertain the gull?

alerted
by the seabird’s screech,
will not aphrodite,
goddess of the ocean sea,
command a disenchanted swell
to rain the bitter tears of hell
upon the empty beach?

take me from the sea?
who will write my poetry?

if I die,
will no one sigh?

ask the gulls to sing my eulogy.

Emphatical statement and endearing sentiment...wish I could be by the seaside..it rejuvenates.

You met that challenge, Gene, with flair.

We are, in the words of a long ago Star Trek alien, "Ugly Bags of Mostly Water," and most of that salty. I'd like to see them really take you from the sea...not possible. This poem is funny, sad, melancholy, witty, full of gulls crying and waves sloshing and in short: GENE! Thanks!

you may achieve being taken but no doubt will return ... the shores await your poetry and the tides still have much to say ...

To remove Gene from the sea
would indeed be blasphemy.
The sea and he unite as one
Without the other - left undone. :)

Your poem much better. Very well penned, my new favorite of yours.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

a marvelous blend of John Masefield's creative talents with a fated suggestion from Moira, Gene -- but alas for a fitting eulogy, gulls are inept -- for the master pen of Poseidon's domain, surely a solo from an erne is in order -- peace and love my friend -- Jon Michael

Since life started in the sea, maybe we would have been better off if we had stayed off the beach. Then, instead of making WMDs, we would be swimming with the dolphins having frolicking good fun?

If I were to paint your portrait, I would paint you an ocean where you would be her breeze - her constant companion, her ever-caressing love.

Now, if you were a fish wouldn't be asking that silly question, "take me from the sea!" I never saw a fish writing poetry or riding a bus!
But your soul could be one, a Pisces like me, although that blasted sign has two (one of each? because I am straight)
Seriously, the poem takes us to that state of mind where desperation take us to a crossroad with many roads, and the only thing we ask is that the eulogy will be sung by a seagull coarse voice(?)
The poem makes you think.

Tinged with sea salt on the Margarita glass...a tender relationship with the sea...downwind from the flamingo colony, the seabirds commune and sea aficionados sample offshore beers...that is, if we were in the Greek islands...buckets filled with pomegranates...sails full and a warm zephyr, Gene...

Pomegranate Brandy

A clean 1-pint glass bottle with cork
2 pomegranates
1 cup (plus or minus) sugar
1 cup grenadine syrup*
1 1/2 cups brandy

Slice pomegranates in half (note: wear a dispensable t-shirt or apron, juice spatters I know!) Slice along the inner membranes, remove seeds, place them in a bowl. Clean the seeds of any cloying skin. Drop seeds into bottle. Add grenadine and sugar to almost fill the bottle. Cork the bottle and set it outside in full sun for two to three weeks. Watch the gulls. When seed flesh softens and has created juice (mixture will reduce as it ages), add brandy to fill bottle. Shake well, strain, and enjoy!

*made from pomegranates

Love,
Sage

Bravo, Gene. Uh oh. I hope I am not the demon in the poem. Don't shoot the messenger! (the challenger). this is wonderful. I especially like the last part, though it made me sad. I didn't mean for you to start talking mortality talk! but what other talk is there? Oh yes, I forgot. sometimes we talk about what's on TV. I'm sure the gulls would certainly sing your eulogy. And no, you wouldn't be you without the sea; of this i'm quite certain. I've never met you, but can tell it is your lover, your extra womb, your friend, your listening ear, your shoulder. I've been taken from the South, but the south cannot be taken from me. Just how it goes. i like the questioning nature of this poem. I even like the rhyme. And if you die, I will more than sigh, believe me. So just .......don't.

Your Eulogy...as per the gulls...(ed)

Under the boardwalk he slept,
Amongst the waves as a youngster he leapt,
Memories of the sea he forever kept,
Writing of the ocean he was most adept,
Taken away in death, of him all the gulls wept...J.L.Seagull

Gene,
So clever and tender and the technique of rhetorical questions is perfect in the context and the intent. You are the sea and a separation is out of the question.

The Ravyn: Riding the Cyclone by Jennifer Sloan by Erin Kelly-Moen

This book has been eight years in the making. It is mostly a jumble of thoughts written down in old spiral notebooks and hidden in the bottom drawer underneath various manuals for software packages and hardware long since turned obsolete.
