Me According to Laotse?

Thoughts on another sleepless night.

Existence, he said,
is beyond the power of words to define.
Existence is temporal,
the essence of existence universal.

Okay, so essence spawns existence:
the impulse behind Picasso's Reclining Nude,
the blueprint of the Brooklyn Bridge,
the thought behind the Ode On A Grecian Urn,
the shadows on the wall of Plato's cave.

I guess one could say that essence is always--

yesterday, next week, now;
like dinosaurs and space monkeys coexisting.
Am I but a flickering shadow on some cosmic sideshow,

a never ending film on the curving reel of time?

Does my existence manifest perhaps in a process

that began for me several billion years ago
from a blending of stardust in some primordial soup?

Did I not evolve by way of some selective process
of replication and mutation?

I  have the hint of a gill, a tailbone, tooth of a canine.

Conceived of Laotse's universal seed,
am I not an aspect of all life preceding me,
a suggestion of all life to come?

Might I imply that my being here was predetermined,

that I happened in the natural flow of things?
Simply because I am here?

From wonder into wonder, said Laotse,
existence opens
.

I like your style, my friend, and your mind seems it may run in a similar rut to mine. I shall have to read more of your work.

Infinity is never more than a perception to mankind. For it is far beyond our ability to comprehend. Metrics are utile in most of our menial pursuits. And absolutely ridiculous to the relativity of everything else. We fixate on our own existance and lose sight of the larger perspective of the universe. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. The deep thoughts that keep us awake, gene. Nice turn of phrase and philosophical debate in this Laotzian poem.

Ah, Gene - you've been inside my mind again! "...a never ending film on the curving reel of time?" is brilliant. Your second stanza - also brilliant . . .

I think your existance was predetermined by a much greater power and that basically every thing that happens is written in the book of life. Much to think about on a sleepless night...M

I love your sleepless ponderings Gene
I think we all may be apart of the petri dish
infected & sterile
fertile & spade...
or are we ripe or stale?
spiritually the essence is borrowed
and we return to its source
we are all bankers withdrawing
& depositing on our death
...you cause me to ponder with you
I am a guestimator you know making my imagination
work over time....sighhhh :)

& Even In The Outer-Spaces

Fascinating - I just posted a piece about all of us being just specks in the Cosmos.

Yes, an aspect of all life and a perpetual wonder..just remove this mad concept of time and we see the continuum, the unbroken...but
we have this bad habit of measuring.
Fine thinking, Gene, and delightful expression.

Everything that we are, is order. It has to be or else we'd disappear into a lawless(nature's laws) thing...Thanks for the nocturnal journey.

Well said. We are here because we are here so let's make the most of it. Then if our published words live longer than our mortal coil, we extend existence for one that is not mortal any longer.

Then we have parents that say,"Let my child have fun. Why work? After all, he didn't ask to be born." Huh?

Who knows? I have been wondering about that equation most of my life. After I am through with writing a screeplay about my latest novel, "Ouroboros: Terror in Thibodaux," I plan to write a script exploring what you have brought up and other "things."
