Updated haibun published some years ago in the haiku journal, Virtual Image.

In this crowded city that somehow seems secure to those around him, he is a stranger. On this restless summer’s night he senses a magnet on his mind…

warm night blankets
the city that never sleeps
he cold awake

He lies there wondering if there is a sky above the city, recalling times when sky was blue, when the sun dropped out of sight to leave the moon the night, when stars were not just glittered cardboard, when he heard the rhythm of the universe in the rolling of the surf…

midnight beach
the pull of the moon
on naked feet

He can feel it now, from distant miles away, the ocean’s drag. It happens frequently, for the ocean brine is flowing in his veins. He feels it in the sting of a razor cut, tastes it in the wound, tastes it in the sweat of this sleepless night. He thinks he even smells it…

warm breath of summer
drifts in from the fragrant marsh
jolts his senses

He is a creature of the sea and he is going home, away from the monotony of horns and squeal of tires, cacophony of city life, far from the city grime, the gaudy neon, far from the riveting street noise...

jackhammers!
above the city the smog
cooking in the sun

Clearly he hears the gull’s cry summoning him, the salty taste of home on his lips, in his lungs, burning bridges behind him…

summer’s surf
rushing to greet him, ease
his troubled mind

Sleep slips in on the tide.

Very effective piece of work. Although I have heard of the haibun, I had never seen it in print until now. I think I might give it a try later one. this was exceptional.

I love the effective contrasts, Gene; and you have very effectively shared the state of mind of your character through your verses here. Thank you. Love and peace to you,

Gene, the salt air and gulls are ever circling. Awaiting their turns to share tales of maritime adventures with a young sea faring man. Lost in an urban hell with its ever present disdain for individualism and freedom to roam. So beneath the night sky lighted with moon beams, you'll dream as the tide of desire pulls you strongly to the ever beckoning sea. You are a soul of the ebbing tide and rolling surf. Much of who you are is shared with conviction and honesty in this marvelous, moving work. Romance tiptoes across the wet sands and into the rolling surf of the tides of man. I bid you love and peace my dear friend. Jon Michael

A subtext of his mind being full of stormy waves, rather than a motionless one at peace with itself.
Intelligently written.

A wonderful and original piece of writing, Gene. Your depiction of the feelings in a crowded city and the freedom of the sea are so familiar to me. Just love them.
