The Title of this poem, refers to both characters in the story.
~ Mighty and Small ~
A fist full of knuckles, face down on the floor. A kick in the head, blood commencing to pour. Fractured face, broken bones, bruises…bruises…everywhere. Pieced together time and again, in constant need of repair.
Frozen in fear, my feet cannot walk, past freedom’s open door. Safety has no place for me, inside this violent storm. Lost in humiliation, through years of domestic despair. Embarrassing lack of courage…or, was it ever really there…
Afraid to stay, afraid to go, afraid of life itself, How and when and could I, escape this living hell. I’m not sure who I am now, or who I used to be, A life pretending to exist, in horrendous brutality.
Every move controlled by fear, be careful, watch your step, Or fists will fly, a blackened eye…a move I won’t forget. Soldiers overcome their fear, rushing forward into war, My cowardice depletes me, of strength I’m dying for.
A search for courage, desperate, to find myself again. Everything familiar, is right here in Satan’s Den. All I am or ever will be, stand forever the accused, Judged not by those, who felt the blows, of physical abuse.
Very powerful piece, Bonnie, and I was especially grabbed by the last verse:
"A search for courage, desperate, to find myself again.
Everything familiar, is right here in Satan’s Den.
All I am or ever will be, stand forever the accused,
Judged not by those, who felt the blows, of physical abuse."
I cannot shake this feeling, from your piece, of defeated triumph, of hopelessness in awareness... It reminds me of my friend, Jenn, who died earlier this year, right before her book, published by her friends who loved her and had followed her pennings of past, horrid-painful trials, was actually able to be ordered and held in her hands.
She changed my life, Bonnie, with writings like this. Any injustice and its pain exposed for others to see and understand can only help humanity. And it might touch one life in profundity, spurring the courage this piece shows in its voice, to turn around a mind and life.
This collection of poetry addresses the nature of time, reflections on the natural world, the difficulty of loss,
contemporary social issues and gratitude for life.
A Collection of Voices from Around the World is more than just a poetry compilation. It is a partnership of poets from around the globe brought together by an internet poetry forum. That forum, poetrypages.com, has been the home of many a fine poet s
