Pushing her basket, heaped to the top,
Down to the river, her usual stop.
Under a bridge, well hidden from sight,
She walks towards her refuge, into the night.
Humming a tune, as she drudges along,
Repeatedly singing an old childhood song.
Lyrics escape absent minded lip sync,
She pulls out a bottle, has a quick drink.
A basket of treasures, kept safely in tow,
Guarded with vengeance, contents in stow.
Drunk as a skunk, chilled down to the bone.
She walks to a bridge, she regards home.
Safe in her shelter, beneath railroad ties,
Laid down on cardboard, an old woman cries.
Bewildered, confused, perplexed in her plight,
She looks toward the sky and into the night…
