Poem Artwork

Ole Moon you been a shine'in,
Since the day that I was born,
And now, well you're still shine'in,
On this black man, tired and worn.

You been hang'in round Ole Moon,
For long as I been breath'in.
I ponder, when I'm old and dies,
If you too, will be leave'in.

You gots to keep on shine'in Ole Moon,
Tired fingers,miss pickin's in black.
I gots to keep on work'in Ole Moon,
Stuff'in em' ole gunny sacks.

Ole Moon you shines on my black ass,
Way long into the night,
Pick'in cotton by your moonbeams,
Work'in quick to beat the blight.

And when Ole Moon, I lays me down,
You shines on me then too,
I thanks the Lord for give'in me,
The lights I gets from you.

We prays by your bright lights Ole Moon,
Makes love'in by it too.
You shines on Bessie's dark brown skin,
Make'in Bessie looks brand new.

You shines into our shack out back,
Make’in it looks so clean,
You must be magic, Yeller Moon,
Know'in us folks need your beams.

I'm behold'in for you're help,Ole Moon,
Shine'in on the likes of me.
A po black man,in this new land,
Just long'in to be free.

The sun don't be no friend of mine,
He burns me black as coal,
Long days, I feels him blister'in me,
Breath'in fire down in my soul.

It don't be easy work'in fields,
Pick'in cotton at high noon,
Wait'in hard and long for day to pass,
To live by the lights of Ole Moon.
