The yarrow stalks,
The plant for divination,
As well as some sacred things
Like white jade and green jadeite
Were never perceived as simply
As the stove plants or pebbles.
They always were the objects
Of worship because they were
Oracular mediator and because
They showed something
That was concealed behind the veil
Of unknown and therefore scary.
They always were the sacred things
For our ancestors in the great past and
For most of us today whose good faith
Is cherished and firmly concentrated
From day to day, year after year,
Throughout the entire lifetime.
