ARE THERE 'FOND' MEMORIES?

THE PIC? NOT MY MERC ... J.D.'s RV ...

MY CARS - PART 1

© - Tom Hyland - 3/30/12

Was Reminiscing the Other Day ...
Thought I’d make a List - I May ...
And Even Do It - ‘My Way’!

Actually Learned to Drive on an Old Green Chevy -
‘Butch’ Truckenmiller’s Dad’s 1952 ...
It was Back in ’56 - and - It was a ‘Stick-Shift’

Graduated H.S. in June of ’58 ...
First JOB in September of Same Year ...
At The Social Security Administration ...

Night Shift - File Clerk GS-2 ...
Saved my Money Every Pay-Day ...
Wanted a CAR - Do Not Dismay ..

‘Twas March or April of ’59 ...
Buddy Wayne Knell, a Good Mechanic,
Took me around Shopping for something Used.

Number One - El Numero Uno!
Found it on Patapsco Avenue in Brooklyn Area.
M&M ‘s Used Car Lot ...

1953 Mercury Monterey V-8 - Stick-Shift ...
2-Door Hard-Top - Pea Green Bottom -
With Dark Green Top - Just Glistening in the Sun!

Rolled & Pleated Leather Interior ...
Cream-Colored Verticals -
With Dark Green Horizontal Seat-Tops!

Had a ‘Stock’ Push-Button Radio ...
With a ‘Fader’ Control for Front/Rear Speakers -
Plenty of Room in Engine Compartment for Working!

We took Him out for a ‘Spin’ ...
Wayne drove First - to see ‘What He Could Do’ -
This ‘Sucker’ could Really Move - and had Over-Drive!

Then, we Swapped, and I got my Chance ...
No Power Brakes - No Power Steering - No Power Anything!
Just a Powerful Engine!

It was ‘Love at First Sight’!
Plunked Down my $1,000 CASH ...
Signed the Papers - and I Was a Proud Owner Now!

Wayne Followed me in his ’46 Ford Coupe,
With a ’48 Merc Engine, and a ‘Rumble Seat’ in Back.
Up Patapsco, Over Hanover Street Bridge, Up Barney St.

First Stop - ‘Dodson’s Corner’ - My ‘Hang-Out’ Place!
It was a Saturday Afternoon ...
So All the Guyz n’ Galz Were There!

All the ‘OOHS n’ AAHS n’ WOWS’ ...
Were Quite Graciously Accepted ...
Everybody Wanted a ‘Ride’ in My First Set of ‘ New Wheels’!

Man - It Felt Good! Such Admiring Attention!
I Could Hardly Wait Until Evening Fell ...
To ‘Show’ this ‘Baby’ Off at GINO’s!

Remember Gino Marchetti of The Baltimore Colts Fame?
It was One of his First Franchise’s -Right on Patapsco Ave.
Not a Half-Mile Away from the Car Lot!

‘CRUISIN’ Around the Drive-In’s Lot ...
Lettin’ Everybody SEE ME Behind The Wheel ...
Especially ... THE GIRLS!

Was I DROOLIN’ ... or What?

FOOTNOTE:

Although I was ‘Legal’ at Eighteen ...
Put the Title & Insurance in my Sister Adele’s Name ...
So I was ‘Supposed to be a ‘Temporary Driver’

Under the Old JR-11 Insurance Rules ...
It was Much Cheaper in Premium ...
And Money IS Money ... Ain’t It?

Truth Be Told Tho’ ...
‘Dele’ Didn’t Even Have a Driver’s License!
Let Alone, Even Know How To Drive!

We Worked This ‘Angle’ ...
For Four Years - Until I Hit 22 ...
And Qualified for SR-22 Coverage!

MY CARS - PART 1 -

‘To Be Continued’ ...

One Lucky Guy by Paul Lonardo

(Richard M. Feldman) Ever since I was a young boy, the only thing I wanted to be was a cowboy. I wanted to own and work on a real ranch, with cattle and horses. Especially horses. While I never became a cowboy, considering everything I have done
