Make Me Wait

It’s getting late again tonight.
I tell myself that it’s alright-
These things happen, know they do.
Any time I’ll hear from you.

Pictures streaming through my mind-
Read a bit so I’ll unwind.
Seems these pages just don’t turn,
Think this heart will ever learn?

So I softly speak your name,
Shake my head, release the blame.
This is how we dreamers feel-
Love’s the only thing that’s real.

Search around but you’re not there-
Somehow looking everywhere-
Catch myself, “Oh silly me,”
Always we’re the last to see.

God, I guess it’s serious-
Shouldn’t be mysterious-
Folks with hearts out on our sleeves,
Waiting, I’m the one who grieves.

Then- just like another day-
As if you never went away,
“Hi, how are you, how’ve you been?”
Tears are messing up my grin.

Guess you never need to know-
How your absence kills me so.
Welcome back my dearest friend.
Won the game of let’s pretend.
