The Past Asks More
By John Herlihy

The past has already existed;
The future has not yet arrived.
The past no longer exists;
The future may never arrive.
The past knows who it is,
Where it has gone, what it has done.
The future doesn’t know who it is,
Where it will go, what it will do.

The past calls for reflection,
The future calls for speculation.
The past asks more of the future,
Than the future asks of the past.
The past has already done,
Things that cannot be undone.
The future has not yet done,
Things that may never be done.

The future has the benefit of foresight,
The past has the benefit of hindsight.
The future knows what it doesn’t know,
The past doesn’t know what the future will know.
The narrative of history lies in state,
Surrounded by candles, silence accompanies it fate.
The narrative of the future lies in waiting,
Surrounded by mist, beckoning and baiting.

The future asks nothing of the past,
Except why it did what it did.
What is the lesson to be learned,
So that future mistakes may be spurned.
The past asks much more of the future,
Because the future deserves much more.
The future not yet written, not yet read,
A future not yet living, not yet bled.

I read much turmoil in your long description of the past and its future in your poem. One thing is for sure, the future will exist with or without us. On the other hand, as far as now is known, we humans are the only earthly creatures who can understand the concept of time passing with a past and envision a future. All others live only in the present with instincts to tell them what may be coming, like winter or breeding season.

In a technological world, we create the future. It is a heavy task that I'm afraid we're not very good at.

the past may be considered as 'downstream' while the future 'upstream' of the same river called 'lifetime.' Of course, to go against the steam you need a concentration of all your strengths and senses to succeed; otherwise, you will be washed away. . . if we take 'the author' of this piece as 'the invisible present,' we understand that he is safe and sound, thinking properly of his surroundings in time ;)) Cheers, alex

I am of the view that we (me big time) spend way too much time looking into their (my) past and using it as a crutch. We should, of course, look back and see the mistakes we have made and use that knowledge to avoid similar mistakes. Good write!

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
