Some people think otherwise,
But why should it not have a name?
This fiendish impulse we carry within us,
Strong enough to make us insane.
His name is none other than Lucifer,
There is no one more famous the world over.
He walks the meadow of our heart to pick clover;
Worse, he wanders in our souls with imperiousness,
While we deny his existence in all seriousness.
There are times I feel my heart racing,
No doubt, the fiend is thoughtfully pacing.
A decision to take action lies at hand,
As evil lingers in the shadows with a reprimand.
Lucifer stands always at the ready with a cup,
Filled with drafts of evil desires for me to sup.
With red cape and pointed horns that slowly grow,
His eyes shine with a mysterious glow.
God’s eternal day doesn’t lack a single hour
That our friend Lucifer doesn’t tower
Over our lives with his insidious power.
He makes us less than what we truly are,
Our human nature has fallen from a nearby star.
In your reckoning, he goes by another name,
A designation that brings with it far less shame;
Even without a name, he still plays his sordid game.
Whether Satan, Mephistopheles, Beelzebub, or Iblis,
It matters nothing to him that we have no peace,
In his mind, we live our lives on his lasting lease.
Even if we attribute to him no real name,
He still walks thru our souls as landlord all the same.
While we humans will have to endure this old chum,
In a tenantry that will last the ages until kingdom come.
I grew up with a very real fear of The Devil...he haunted my life...and my background reinforced this heavily...
Nowadays I see wrongdoing as part of the human condition, though not one to be easily tolerated...and self discipline and kindness the tools that will ultimately defeat such things...
I no longer give power to his existence by naming him....

this piece of a loud message actually speaks of difficulties a man goes through at the point between having a rest (Lord) and taking action or making a proper decision (the subject of this message). The latter embodies knowledge which we used to call 'technology' and which leads us toward the logical end; only humans, through their activities, are able to destroy themselves. How people will be transformed (ethically and physically) by the moment of Apocalypses tells us whether they return to the fold of God (peace and rest at easy) with their rich stock of cultivated in the 'grinder' virtues or otherwise. . . What else, a thing which has no name merely doesn't exist. . . "The call me 'hell,' they call me 'Stacey,' they call me 'her,' they call me 'Jane'. . . That's not my name. . ." (lyrics!!) ;)) Cheers, alex
I prefer the Devil, like in, "the devil made me do it!" ;-)
Some of us are more worried about that Satan within us than others. If we chalk it up to bad judgment, poor instinct, or downright stupidity, then the devil in us is merely another part of the human character. Certainly one that we have to curtail from time to time.
Oh, he is a busy "thing" isn't he? I really enjoyed what you said in this line, "While we humans will have to endure this old chum". Yes, we must endure his hell he sows so freely but we don't have to succumb to any of it. Great write!
Ahhh . . . The evil one does indeed come to spend some time with us and in severe cases sets up a home away from home (hell). It is up to us to banish the wicked one from our midst.
This collection of poetry addresses the nature of time, reflections on the natural world, the difficulty of loss,
contemporary social issues and gratitude for life.
In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
