There is one last road I’ve got to take;
There is one last promise I’ve got to make.
Similar roads have now disappeared into the past;
Roads that offered adventure and life while they last.
Vagabonds make friends with June bugs on the dusty road;
Drifters end up confiding their worries to the obliging toad.
Am I just a transient tramp relying on the mercy of a stranger,
Or a lost trekker wandering in the footsteps of a forest ranger?
Still, questions drive me forward with convincing answers to seek;
Another country visited last year, another city explored last week.
Sometimes, I wish I had never started down any of these roads;
Often, I wonder about the choices that led me to unexpected antipodes.
No doubt the road leads somewhere and the search is always there;
It is done and dusted now with a few fledgling desires left to spare.
A little bird passing told me one last road still lay invitingly ahead;
The luxury of choices no longer exists to take another road instead.
The road down old age has its compensations, including peace of mind;
Desire and memory keep us moving forward as they are intertwined.
Memory sings of years of happiness now disappearing into the past;
Desire takes us down the last road home with peace destined to last.
There are always different roads we can travel and we have the free will to do so. This poem is exquisite and I truly enjoyed reading it. It is so good to be able to come here again.
Reminiscent (in certain ways to me) of a John Keats quote.
"No, no, I'm sure,
my restless spirit could never endure,
to brood so long upon one luxury,
unless it did so fearfully espy
a hope beyond the shadow of a dream."
I can relate. Peace... rlc
I understand why you can't seem to end your wanderlust. Another opportunity to travel or to see just comes up when you thought you were through with all of that. Such is life. The more we know, the more we want to know.
most of all, I like the second stanza of this song -- the four lines that I think I know what they are speaking of between the lines, as I've been there. But then the word 'desire' used thrice downstairs makes me feel guarded. . . in all, it's a good piece of poetry, John. Cheers, alex
Somehow, John, I have a feeling that you will never lose your wandering, looking for different soil to trod, ways. You may slow down, but even if old age causes you to cease and desist your vagabond ways, your mind will still reach out to places beckoning for you to come . . . one last time . . . come!
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
