Portrait of Darkness and Light
By John Herlihy

We all know about the day’s bright light,
Just as a blanket of darkness covers night.
A candle luminous, a firefly shines bright,
The message is clear, light swallows night.

Consider the light and darkness of the soul,
Dark brooding never made a person whole.
Brooding there is, a moody, ominous luster,
Darkening the efforts our souls can muster.

Light and darkness display alternative measures;
Each manifestation has its own unique treasures.
Light draws our soul toward the spirit world;
The darkness lures us into a deep well hurled.

The dark’s darkness merely the soul ravages;
What it inspires turns us into unholy savages.
As our destiny unfolds, the dark patiently waits;
Each of us lives a life suited to our individual fates.

Where then does the darkness truly reside;
When darkness comes, where does the light hide.
Whether it be the brightest day or blackest night;
Each fills my eyes and truly overwhelms my sight.

Darkness has no need for the perishing light;
The day’s light has no need of the blackest night.
They are mutually exclusive; they cannot endure
To be in each other’s company, that’s for sure.

NOTHING, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...WAS/IS CREATED OR ALLOWED TO EXIST FOR NAUGHT. LIGHT AND DARK. WE NEED THEM BOTH...INSIDE AND OUT(MANKIND AND EARTH), OTHERWISE EITHER ONE WOULD EXIST. FACT IS; THE EXTREME OF EITHER CAN DO SO MUCH DAMAGE, YET, IN MODERATION BOTH ARE QUITE VALUABLE. ONE, THEN, REVEALS THE OTHER PERFECTLY. SOMETHING ONLY A PERFECT GOD COULD HAVE CREATED. THANK YOU, JOHN, FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Insightful. We need both darkness and light, to appreciate what each one has to offer us.

I love the duet of light and dark, both have their purpose, and yes they hardly ever meet but when they do, we have real beauty, Thanks for sharing, John.

This is a beautiful poem that explains the important of light and darkness. Light and darkness are two things that we don't usually talk about so much but the reality is that we experience them every day. Nice poem.

We need the darkness to see the light,
it's up to us to do what's right,
and you enlighten with this write.

. . . that's for sure. Amen. However, this portrait of darkness and light (putting the darkness on the first place as the mother of all things around) has the mirror reflection when we try to find our worth (light) on the constant basis. Again, many thoughts provoking piece to be reread time and again. Cheers, alex

You have given us many contrasts to "reflect" upon. And you have chosen the ideal pair. Whether in physics, prose, poetry, or mood these two seem to brighten or dim the way. Very original.
