-- The Worst Loneliness -–
John Herlihy
Even the worst loneliness isn’t so bad,
A chronic case of the blues I never had.
A lot of things in the night sky, look there,
Those lonely stars on their own as we stare.
The churning of a ship’s wake casts a spell,
Of all the lonely nights fallen down in a well.
Images of loneliness seem to be all around,
The first star of night alone, even if profound.
What about the moon edging over earth’s lip,
Inducing a dreamy solitude within us sip by sip.
The loneliness of travel, being in a strange crowd,
The loneliness in sickness, wrapped in its shroud.
The worst loneliness in the world I never truly knew,
My loneliness never stays long, with the wind blew.
