-- In Memory of Silence --
John Herlihy
Holy silence, where have you gone,
Silenced forever in our raucous lives.
What, alas, have we done so wrong,
If eternal silence no longer survives.
The sacred silence of outer space
Vies with the silence of the spheres.
Silence that dwells in the human race
Has dwindled slowly over the years.
We move about in noisy confusion;
Perpetual noise sent forth in profusion.
Silence once floated on lakes with swans
Blew as soft wind in the first light of dawns.
In memory of silence, I bow humbly down,
To return to a silence that never knew sound.

Living largely alone, I find quiet times throughout the day very beneficial for my psyche. Some people never get that opportunity to just, think in silence. But I am also losing my hearing and one day may find myself in silence all the time. Not something I look forward to.
