-- Nomadic Ghosts –

John Herlihy

Where do dreams betake themselves,

When they quit the slumberer’s brain?

Nomadic ghosts pretending to be elves,

As the dreamer awakens to feel the drain.

Into the netherworld of sleep, unannounced,

The ghostly specters dangle tempting bait.

In timelessness, their obscure tale pounced,

In this land of unsubstantial things to relate.

The imposing night of dreams offers obscurity,

The will of the dream upon the dreamer imposed.

Driftwood on a shoreless sea without any surety,

A funereal dirge of the human psyche composed.

When we awaken, we thank Heaven they are gone,

With no desire such nightmarish fantasy to prolong.

I REMEMBER HAVING 'SCARY' DREAMS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER. I CAN ONLY THANK GOD FOR HAVING LIVED LONG ENOUGH THAT THEY HAVE LONG AGO DISAPPEARED. I DARE TO THINK IT'S BECAUSE OF MY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT/EMBRACE OF 'HIM' AND 'HIS' LIGHT IS IN MY LIFE...THAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE? THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Oh, I don't know. Yes, I've had bad dreams. Terrible dreams. But I've also had sweet ones. So sweet I didn't want to wake up. Just this morning was such. I'd have slept forever if I could have, if it hadn't meant death.

You have beautifully described that netherworld that leaves us perplexed sometimes and even makes us wonder if we slept at all when they are so vivid and demanding. The last two lines bid nightmares goodbye so well.

Great title. Would make a good name for a band. Enjoyed this John. Learned a new word too: funereal. Thanx 4 sharing. r

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
