-- Ghostly Fog --

John Herlihy

The ghostly fog rides upon a gentle wind,

Silently, oh so silently.

Its feeling of calmness and peace to lend,

Willingly, oh so willingly.

The eerie vapor advances on panther paws,

Stealthily, oh so stealthily.

Swallowing entire valleys in its gaping jaws,

Greedily, oh so greedily.

Every pine tree in the forest will succumb,

Submissively, oh so submissively.

The misty dawn blanket has the landscape won,

Triumphantly, oh so triumphantly.

Veiling for a while the early light of the day,

Momentarily, oh so momentarily.

Ready to give its mystical solitude away,

Dreamily, oh so dreamingly.

A few crows cawing from the naked tree limbs,

Annoyingly, oh so annoyingly.

Jagged peaks float in this misty sea as shark fins,

Shyly, oh so shyly.

The white air filled with winter’s cold breath,

Briskly, oh so briskly.

A distant loon sings a song of life and death,

Sweetly, oh so sweetly.

Morning sun soon dissipates the fleeting fog,

Knowingly, oh so knowingly.

The ghostly fog returns home in the murky bog,

Reluctantly, oh so reluctantly.

The moody verses have had their brief say,

Soothingly, oh so soothingly.

The poet himself goes along his merry way,

Quietly, oh so quietly.

You have covered the many nuances of fog and how it makes us feel emotionally toward it. The fog can range from being very pleasant to terrifying when one driving at speed into fog so thick that you could not see beyond a few feet, hurtling into sure disaster if not slowing down quickly.

I'll never forget driving up to San Francisco along the peninsula when the fog would come rolling over the hills like a great big steamroller every afternoon about 4 o'clock and turn The City's temperature 20° cooler and damper for the evening.

I like the pattern in this one. The repetition, instead of being monotonous, I found to be intriguing . . with the introductory lines of each segment, making me wonder ahead of time, how you would condense the subject/action verb into an adverb, which adverb you might choose for the two-line and four-line of each stanza. Very engaging because of that, and plenty descriptive in 1 and 3 lines. Much enjoyed… ~~ djl

Dense early morning fogs.... one of my favorite moods of nature. Good creative inspiration too. Nicely cerebrated John. r
