-- Darkness Dims the World –

John Herlihy

Every night, darkness dims the world.

Driving sheets of rain descend as spilt ink.

Lightning spears the blackened sky,

Illuminating raindrops as diamond dust.

The rain smells as fresh wind,

Of damp earth, mulch of leaves.

Night rain smells of darkness,

With the smell of something else.

Something that shouldn’t be missed.

I stand on the front porch.

The house door whispers on hinges.

Facing the night rain of the storm,

I stand still in terror and elation.

Feeling filled by the enveloping mystery,

The night, pelting rain, flashes of light.

At my doorstep, night rain inviting me,

To marvel, to wonder, to dream the impossible.

To sprout wings and fly thru wet night air,

Where clouds rumbled and roared,

And lightning streaked across the land.

To be in flight amid a flock of startled birds.

Their feathers washed clean in the driving rain.

The front door plated in silvery sheets.

The whispering door hinges urging me

To fly away in the rain with the birds.

Searching as they do for the lost moon.

GREAT IMAGERY HERE, JOHN. WHAT A BLESSING THE INVIGORATING SIGHT AND SMELL OF OF A NIGHT'S RAIN CAN BE! SUCH A GIFT AS THE LIGHT OF THE MOON GUDIES AND REVEALS THE FLIGHT OF WINGS...THAT INSPIRE. ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS +INSPIRATIONS

Beautiful poetry, John. I can identify. I love the rain. I particularly appreciate the scent of petrichor, that special scent the rain brings after a prolonged dry spell in summer. Love and peace to you, John,

Regis. 🙏🌳🌲🦋🍁

A rather haunting set of verses. For me, a night rain is simply something cold and wet. But on other nights, especially warm nights where the rain has a soothing sound on the roof and the occasional lightning show is very attractive to watch from the safety of a covered porch.

Sometimes, when the rain is warm enough. Just going out into it and letting it trickle down your nose as you splash in puddles, barefoot is one of the greatest feelings of all.

A series of palpable images that resonate. Unrhymed, (IMO) makes this piece even more assimilable. r

Wonderful writing! The atmosphere you paint
Is so evocative…Mysterious feelings swept up
within the frenzy of the driving rain prompts
Impossible dreams, terror and elation…
The energy of such nights creating fantasies
within our psyches as we contemplate becoming
one with this Marvellous landscape..

This poem is a sensory delight! One of my favorite things is a rainy night when I can look out a window and experience the drama of blowing rain, wicked lightening, and a cacophony of thundering booms. It just sets my blood to humming!
