-- Who – John Herlihy Mysteries abound, but the abiding question Who? An undeniable Reality to which the creation is due. Who monitors the flow of the tide’s ebb? Who designs the weave in the spider’s web? Who measures the reach of the mountain’s height? Who makes the twilight such a glorious sight? Who strikes the dawn with its magical spell? Who creates the depths in a bottomless well? Who unfolds the heart of the budding flower? Who shines forth light with its luminous power? Who fashioned the feathers in the bird’s wing? Who sends forth wind when the pine trees sing? Who put the green in green, the blue in blue? Who revealed the knowledge of all that we knew? Who inspired the devotion in the industry of bees? Who sets in motion the rhythm of the vast seas? Who casts the mystical glow in the moon’s light? Who blackens the darkness in the hours of the night? Who shutters the night to make way for the day? Who created faculties that make possible what we say? Who blows the spirit into the body at birth? Who withdraws the spirit from the body at death? Who is the creator of all that we see? I will never understand how people can ask questions such as these and not believe there is a power far greater than we are at work in the universe. The lyrics of a song I once heard say it all: "I can't believe that we just happened, and don't know what for. There must be more!"

Who indeed!
�I believe a benevolent energy
directs all that is fantastic and mysterious�who beats our hearts,
how do all the fantastic chemical activities occur every second within our bodies�?
To believe the wonders of this Earth �just happened�
by accident is more impossible to believe�We have become accustomed and take
for granted all of this glorious �magic� that we experience continually�

However, the eternal mystery will one day be revealed for all to see and experience�

Who indeed! The eternal question that has many different answers or speculations from the heart or mind on the quest for truth. I have my belief and respect the beliefs of others. I enjoyed this poem, it posed the question, but it left it up to the reader to seek the answer.

So many, like you seem to be searching for a spiritual leadership for everything. You want answers before you die. But all you find is that religion teaches rituals from the distant past that no longer have any real meaning, and science continues to unravel secrets that were unfathomable just a few years ago.

The problem is that people seem to want simple answers to complex problems. I look at the universe, marvel at what is known, and look forward to the next discovery, sure to come faster every year. But my mind is too small, the distances too great, for me to spend any time worrying about a source, let alone a creator.

It is interesting to note that natural selection leading to survival of the fittest, has created, here on earth, a rather stable planet for millions of years, life in such abundance that it has even been able to create a being that can wonder about who and what we are. That's enough for me. I don't need to look any further chasing rumors and charlatans telling us that they know.
