-- The Coming of Day and Night --

John Herlihy

We find ourselves forever talking about light;

What can we say about the darkness of night.

That light shines gloriously thru universal laws;

That darkness creeps stealthily on panther paws.

That light in luminous rhythms illuminates the way;

That darkness in sober silence has so much to say.

Light, in mercy of full disclosure, has nothing to hide;

Darkness, in protective stance, has secrets to confide.

During the daytime, we do not seek out the dark;

We bask in the open sunlight, flying free as a lark.

During the nighttime, we light candles, turn on a lamp;

As if to negate the darkness and impose our own stamp.

The brilliance of light dispels our inmost fear;

The protectiveness of darkness makes our anonymity clear.

In light, its life-giving energy helps us to grow;

In darkness, its reflective moods into the heart flow.

In light, feelings of light-heartedness of mind into sky brew;

In darkness, a heavy-handed probe in mystery we pursue.

The coming of light signifies the day’s hour;

The coming of darkness signifies the night’s power.

The dawn announces the demise of the night’s darkness;

The twilight announces the demise of the day’s light.

We argue about many things, but one irrefutable truth;

Certainty in the coming of the day, the coming of the night.

We came from the cycle of day and night and we have adapted to both. Still, we worship the sun first, and think of the night holding evil that we just can't see. But we know it's there and avoid confrontation.

Indeed. There is something so magical about the night, the darkness, the cyclic change from what we think we see to the space of blackness where, as in the color spectrum where black absorbers all the light, allowing zero reflection of color, but, oh, so much absorbed to call upon with the inner sight and voice. One can actually see so much more... beneath the obvious.
