-- Retreat into Solitude --

John Herlihy

There are times when only solitude is the answer

In our tale.

Some unexpected disappointment, a life-changing event

Lost the holy grail.

A need to turn away from the contingencies of the world

And its cruelties.

To lay oneself down in the clearing of a wakeful sleep

Free of one’s duties.

An unhappiness, some misery, to bravely endure

A lasting sorrow.

The treachery of a friend, the rejection of a lover,

As we enter tomorrow.

To wrap oneself completely in the protective cocoon

Of being alone.

With absolutely no desire of intrusion or interruption

To be solitary prone.

The night draws close and the distant stars drift down,

All nature coming near.

The moon and its tributary moonbeams illuminating

Another world held dear.

There to lie sequestered, to simply drain away

Every second, minute, hour.

To be emptied of this world, filled with another world

Absorbing its special power.

To find in the sacred grove of quietude,

The much needed and soothing balm of solitude.

I spend a lot of my time in solitude. Sometimes it's of my making and other times it's made for me. Yet, despite the loneliness that threatens, I find that I am at my most creative and most insightful when there's no one else around.

As I read you made me think of Henry David Thoreau. When he retreated into solitude and spent some days reflecting at Walden Pond. Everyone needs to read his classic account. How the solitude cleared his mind to write one of the best philosophical sociological treatises of all time.

And I recalled the times when I went walking down the road to the river in solitude after my operation thinking through what I had to do to continue my life paralyzed.

As you wrote, solitude is good for the soul.

That is the best description I've read on why solitude can be such a bliss. I like to surround myself with people, but not as much as I enjoy being alone. Well written!

A perfectly formed ode to solitude. Parts of the poem's world of escape are universal and generously provoke all of us to seek out the virtues, solace, and aloneness with oneself. Good therapy for many things that ail us.
