-- To Be Content --

John Herlihy

I need very little to be content,

Money’s value only to be spent.

Life has so much more to offer,

Hidden treasures in my coffer.

Give me minutes to the hour,

Idle time offers unique power.

To loneliness I am not prone,

Solitude a friend when alone.

Having purpose sets me free,

My identity sees the true me.

Possessions have little hold,

I give thanks without being told.

Demands do make me dizzy,

My discipline keeps me busy.

So many things I want to do,

Things that feel right and true .

Once I didn’t know who I am,

Happily playing, an infant man.

The innocent child so content,

Never knowing what it meant.

Now I do know who I am,

Writing a poem, an old man.

A new innocence – content,

To know now what it meant.

WHEN ALL IS SAID IS DONE...IT IS A WISE MAN WHO NOW HAS REACHED 'CONTENTMENT', GLAD FOR THE ROAD FROM WHICH HE HAS COME. I AM BLESSED, I THINK...TO BE ONE OF THOSE WHO IS A PARTAKER OF THE POETRY FROM THAT OLD MAN(SMILE). A FINE WORK. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

Sounds to me like you've always had a good idea of who you are. That's to be envied. It's hard to see yourself as yourself when you have so much static from those who would mold you into their vision of who they think you should be.

I like the way you laid out so effortlessly and honestly what makes you so content. We share many of those thoughts and activities you describe. This is one of your best poems that I've read.

I love this poem. I love its rhythm. I love the sound of it when I read it aloud. I love what it says because its meaning is precious. Thank you for writing it, John. I am content when I am writing, reading, or listening to poetry. I am old, and I am content in my home, with my wife. We both are retired teachers. I have been retired nearly 24 years, my wife 23 years. We’ve traveled a lot. It was fun. What a beautiful world out there. Now, we rest a lot, for we are content. Thank you for making me realize how wonderful it is to be content. Blessings to you.
