-- Soon --

by John Herlihy

At the border of waiting lies the feeling of soon,

In the envelope of time holding an inner room.

On this side of the horizon waiting to happen,

On time’s arrow to be used as a sacred weapon,

The future is nothing without a sense of soon,

The budding of the flower brief, waiting to bloom.

If the wait be endless, then patience be timeless,

Anger and impatience ugly, patience beautiful no less.

To wait for something patiently as long as it may take,

Knowing that soon from this dismal waiting to awake.

There in the where and when of time and place,

Soon about to happen hovering behind a veiled face.

To be taken out of myself, to go somewhere, soon,

Beyond the horizon and into the unknown, vroom!

The subtext of this piece speaks loudly and asks us to corral our fear of the unknown, for as you so adroitly show, soon is forever being reborn and awaits those of us in fearless states of mind to be patient and anticipation. Churchhill perhaps said it nearly a hundred years ago as the "soon" card was being waved by Hitler: "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." If only all could embrace the "soon" of your piece with acceptance.
