-- An Air of Satisfaction --

by John Herlihy

Why do we oft speak of an ‘air’ of satisfaction,,

Projected as if it were a ghost found in the air.

Ready to blow away by any wind of retraction,

A smile of satisfaction replaced by a blank stare.

Satisfied feelings touched by the breath of peace,

The whir of satisfaction as a rare perfume inhaled.

To infiltrate the mind as an emotion without cease,

Only to release itself as a faint breath exhaled.

Ah, the sense of peace that comes and goes,

Make its presence felt, yet not for long to linger.

We do something right and yet everyone knows,

Our satisfaction oft destroyed by touch of a finger.

There, in satisfaction’s heart, but a feeble breeze,

Blown away with the lightness of falling autumn leaves.

AN AIR OF SATISFACTION, USUALLY INDICATES...PRIDE... TO SOME. AND YOU KNOW HOW PEOPLE ARE, JOHN...PRIDE IRRITATES A LOT OF PEOPLE. I DON'T KNOW WHY BECAUSE IT SHOULDN'T MATTER AS LONG AS ONE'S 'AIR' HASN'T ANYTHING TO DO WITH THEM, BUT IT DOES AND PEOPLE SHUN WHEN THEY TOO CANNOT FEEL THE LIGHT OF ANOTHER PERSON'S...SUN. THEY WOULD RATHER SEE SOMEONE MOANING OR WITH A BLAND OR SAD EXPRESSION. IT'S THAT SIMPLE. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

As you so adroitly point out, there are but short moments of satisfaction in our everyday life. I gleaned a sense of anxiety in your journey here, one that suggests that many are finding satisfaction perhaps in the limited areas. There is, for instance, a special satisfaction in our writing out thoughts that hopefully impact readers as they read, contemplate, even make changes in their own lives. But... the greater satisfaction, I believe, is knowing that what has been created by the author is forever his or hers (unless you write for Hollyweird). To know that such words are of great and lasting satisfaction comes from understanding one's choice of words is full of pauses in thinking, pauses in choosing, and pauses in making sure reason and rational choices have been made. Yup. That's our satisfaction, even when few may read one's work. For me, it doesn't get any better than having this understanding.

There is no other "feel good" feeling as being able to watch "falling autumn leaves." with a feeling of "peace" and a cup of Jasmine tea knowing that you did the best you can............"satisfaction" felt in the mind and soul, John. You're a rock star with this poem!!

Love ya!

You seem to have tempered satisfaction with the reality of the way life swings between good and bad and you find satisfaction short-lived. Strangely, as I age past the age of my generation's average death, with a physical disability that has caused most great pain and an early death, I find myself feeling more satisfied with each year and comfortable. Sleeping better, and getting things done, with facing doctors and procedures less often than ever before.

By strange coincidence, the mother of kittens, three last year, and five this year–two of them pitch black, and three calico not unlike your picture above–chose last night for the very first time, as I came to exercise at 10 PM and we turned on the yard light to find her sleeping on my deck. All around her, her kittens were playing mock battle with each other and chasing bugs that were invisible to my eyes but a great fascination to the kittens'.

And then, when I came this morning, she was nursing one who she then shooed away and continued to lounge in great satisfaction while her kittens ran off in all directions. Finally when birds came to feed on our bird feeder that wasn't refilled this morning, she strolled off to her daily hunting of unsuspecting birds and insects to feed her family well. From the look of her and her kittens, she is being fed by her owner, but probably has chosen my deck because it is cooler on these hot nights and has fewer insects like fire ants that are very common in the grass.

I couldn't persuade my partner to take any pictures or videos that might make us lots of money on America's Funniest Videos. She thinks the cats are wild and malnourished. Feel sorry for them, while I don't.
